Coal Gas JNL

Designed by Jeff Levine, Coal Gas JNL is a display sans font family. This typeface has two styles and was published by Jeff Levine Fonts.

The unique hand lettering simulating a gas flame inside each character of the film’s title was used in the movie trailer for 1944’s “Gaslight” starring Charles Boyer, Ingrid Bergman, Joseph Cotten and Angela Lansbury.

In fact, based on the plot’s premise, the modern term “gaslighting” is used to describe emotional abuse which can affect a person’s perception of reality.  The term gained popularity in the 2010s.

Trivia:  Old-time home lighting and street lights were lit by coal gas, hence the name of the typeface.

Coal Gas JNL is available in both regular and oblique versions.
