The Henston Pro

The Henston’s initial point of inspiration lays somewhere between Berthold Wolpe’s earlier designs of Albertus and Classic Roman Alphabets, with Herman Zapf influence. It started as an experiment while reading Simon Garfield’s “Albertus. The biography of a typeface” book. I’ve started sketching letters trying to give them a more modern look. It was interesting to explore how “thin” I can go with this typeface without it loosing its readability and style.
The italics were designed with calligraphy in mind.
At the end it evolved into a seven weights family with Thin style having the most contrast and the bolder styles looking more like “carved in stone” once - this is where versatility of this typeface lays. To enhance the family I’ve also added quite a few ligatures as well as stylistic and swashed alternates. You can use it for all sorts of design work - from social media ads to websites, fashion, book covers, magazines etc.
