Nocturne Serif - Proving That Serifs Are Still Cool
|
|
|
|
Two serif fonts featured in a row? I thought those
were
just for old books! Doesn’t the internet only want to use sans fonts now?
Well,
hypothetical strawman, it turns out that serif fonts are useful for plenty of things, not
just
text in an old book! In fact, modern serifs aren’t limited to paragraph text, they can look
just
as great used as a headline font or blown up on a billboard. The best fonts can do both.
Nocturne Serif is a great example of this, let’s take a look at why.

Like many serifs of its kind, Nocturne Serif looks
great as a display font. It has ample variation in the widths. On top of that, you will find
sharp angles where you have come to expect ordinary curves. This is especially true for the
large weights, that have an increased contrast.

Nocturne Serif isn’t limited to usage in display
sizes
though. If you grab a thinner weight or two, it works just as well as a text font. You
should
probably steer clear of older-style writings or designs when using this font, as it
definitely
has a modern feel. That said, at a small enough size it can work for almost any purpose, and
is
quite legible on top of it. The thin and light weights especially look great for page
numbers,
dates, or anything else involving numerals.

You can utilize Nocturne Serif in many places, but
why
would you want to use it at all? Simply put, it doesn’t look like other fonts. It has some
parallels to other modern serifs, but this font has a flair all to its own. It is bound to
get
noticed. And at the end of the day, isn’t that why you’re buying fonts in the first
place?
