Tuna has answered an age old question that has
plagued serif fonts since they’ve been on screen: How do you take a writing style developed
for books and other physical media, and make it look good on screens? Normally we see people
go with the easier option, that is making very symmetrical sans fonts, which scale down to
small text sizes and still look great no matter the display. Serifs, with their extra width
variation and added detail, don’t always fare as well.

Designers Alex Rütten and Felix Braden went after
this
problem in a few ways. First, they made the horizontal and vertical strokes of the font
nearly
even most of the time. This allows the font to fit better to smaller pixel grids, like you’d
see
in small text sizes. They also made their round angles more squared off, which fills the
pixel
grid better and comes out clearer. They also implemented some of the more generalized
stylistic
choices that you’d see in a Sans font, like a high x-height.

The result is a font with historical roots that
date
all the way back to the 11th century and before. It’s a font you could see coming out of an
old
printing press, or used in your favorite novel. At the same time, it’s been modernized with
all
the opentype features you expect in 2017, like ligatures, small caps, oldstyle and tabular
figures, superscripts, and more!
